In April 2025, the Council of Ministers approved the new National Program for Primary Prevention of Cancer Diseases Caused by Human Papillomavirus for 2025–2030. The program significantly expands the coverage of the entitled population, granting the right to free immunization to additional groups such as 14-year-old girls (extending the vaccination opportunity by one year compared to the previous program) and boys aged 10 to 13. In the period 2029–2030, 14-year-old boys will also be included. Additionally, from 2026 until 2028, the coverage will be further expanded to include girls aged 15 to 17. In the final two years of the program (2029–2030), women aged 18 to 21 will also be eligible for immunization.
The target coverage for 2025 is 10% for girls aged 10–14 and boys aged 10–13, aiming to increase uptake to 70% for girls and 40% for boys by 2030. The program’s financial plan allocates nearly BGN 206 million (€103 million) for its implementation during the 2025–2030 period.
